A Nazi Experiment in Stealth Aviation

Two Brothers and a Vision

In the 1930s, German brothers Walter and Reimar Horten were fascinated by aviation. They began experimenting with glider designs and were especially interested in creating aircraft with low drag and high lift.

Developing the Flying Wing

In 1943, they developed the Horten Ho 229, a jet-powered flying wing. This innovative aircraft had a distinctive design with no fuselage or tail, aimed at reducing radar detection, a concept that made it one of the first stealth aircraft.

A Race Against Time

The Horten Ho 229 prototype took its first flight in 1944, but World War II ended before the aircraft could be mass-produced. The only surviving prototype was captured by Allied forces and taken to the United States for further study.

Legacy in Aviation

Today, the Horten Ho 229 is regarded as a precursor to modern stealth technology. The aircraft remains an important piece of aviation history, with its design influencing future aircraft development. A surviving prototype is displayed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
