A Journey Begins on a Bicycle
In 1995, Swedish adventurer Göran Kropp embarked on an extraordinary journey. He left his home in Sweden on a bicycle, with the goal of reaching the base of Mount Everest. Carrying all of his gear and provisions, Kropp pedaled through Europe and Asia, covering more than 8,000 miles on his own.
Reaching Everest Base Camp
After months of cycling, Kropp arrived at Everest Base Camp in Nepal in the spring of 1996. But his adventure was far from over. He had come to summit Mount Everest without the assistance of bottled oxygen or Sherpas—a feat few had attempted.
Solo Summit
On May 23, 1996, Göran Kropp successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest alone and without supplemental oxygen. His remarkable achievement occurred shortly after the tragic 1996 Everest disaster that claimed several climbers’ lives.
Returning the Same Way
True to his independent spirit, after summiting Everest, Kropp descended back to base camp, packed up his gear, and cycled all the way back to Sweden. His entire journey, both to and from Everest, was completed entirely under his own power.
