A Curious Adventure Begins

In the early 1900s, a Croatian-born man named Joseph Mikulec set out on an extraordinary journey. Driven by a desire to see the world, he decided to walk around the globe. Mikulec started his journey from his hometown in Croatia, traveling without modern conveniences or much money.

Walking Across Continents

Mikulec’s path took him across Europe, into Russia, and through Siberia. He navigated through difficult terrains, harsh climates, and met diverse people. From Siberia, he crossed to Japan, and then to the United States, arriving in San Francisco in 1910. He walked across America, through deserts and cities, reaching New York.

30,000 Signatures

Along the way, Mikulec collected 30,000 autographs from figures such as President Woodrow Wilson and British Prime Minister David Lloyd George. His 60-pound, leather-bound album, filled with signatures, stamps, and clippings, became the focus of a Pathé newsreel in 1922.

An Unfinished Quest

Though Mikulec never completed his walk around the world as he had envisioned, his travels left a trail of curiosity. He returned to Europe, continuing his passion for exploration until his death in 1933.
