In 2002, Elon Musk founded SpaceX with the goal of reducing space launch costs. Falcon 1, SpaceX’s first rocket, was designed to be a lightweight and affordable way to reach orbit. However, the journey to success would prove more difficult than expected.
Three Failed Launches
Falcon 1’s first three launches were all failures. The first launch in 2006 ended shortly after takeoff due to a fuel leak. The second, in 2007, failed after a problem with the stage separation. The third, in 2008, also faced an issue during stage separation, causing the rocket to crash.
Near Bankruptcy
After the third failure, SpaceX was on the brink of financial collapse. With funds running low, the fourth attempt would be the company’s last chance. Musk personally invested his remaining resources to keep the company afloat.
A Critical Success
On September 28, 2008, the fourth launch succeeded. Falcon 1 reached orbit, marking the first privately developed liquid-fueled rocket to do so. This success secured future contracts and allowed SpaceX to continue its journey in the space industry.
