A Sudden Disappearance
In February 1947, Lai Teck, leader of the Malayan Communist Party (MCP), packed $1 million in gold and currency into a suitcase and vanished from Malaya. Months later, reports surfaced of his death in Thailand, allegedly strangled by Thai communists.
The Double Agent’s History
Born in Vietnam around 1900, Lai Tek initially worked for the French colonial authorities, then for the British in Singapore and Malaya, before switching sides to aid the Japanese during World War II.
Betrayals and Deception
Lai Tek played multiple sides, betraying MCP members to both the British and Japanese. In 1942, he lured MCP leaders into a trap at Batu Caves, leading to a massacre by the Japanese.
Final Escape and Mysterious Death
In 1947, after being exposed as a double agent, Lai Tek stole the party’s funds and fled. MCP members reportedly tracked him to Bangkok, where he was killed and his body disposed of in a river. His true origins and loyalties remain unclear, and rumors of his survival persisted long after.
