Born in 1916 in Ukraine, Lyudmila Pavlichenko was a history student when Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941. She joined the Red Army as a volunteer and became a sniper, showing exceptional skill with a rifle.

A Record of 309 Confirmed Kills

Pavlichenko fought in some of the fiercest battles on the Eastern Front, including Odessa and Sevastopol. Over the course of her military service, she achieved 309 confirmed kills, making her one of the most successful snipers in history.

Injury and International Tour

In June 1942, she was injured by mortar fire. After her recovery, Pavlichenko was sent to the United States as part of a Soviet delegation, becoming the first Soviet citizen to be received by a U.S. President. She toured the country to raise support for the war effort.

Later Life and Recognition

After the war, Pavlichenko returned to the Soviet Union, completed her education, and became a historian. She continued to work with the Soviet Navy until her death in 1974, receiving numerous honors for her military service.
