A Revolutionary Idea in the 1930s
In 1930, long before GPS technology, the Iter Avto was invented in Italy as the first-ever onboard navigation system. This mechanical device, designed for cars, used paper maps wound on scrolls. As the car moved, the device, connected to the vehicle’s speedometer, would scroll through the maps, showing the driver the route ahead.
How the Iter Avto Worked
The maps in the Iter Avto were created in strips, with different scrolls available for different routes. As the car advanced, the system would automatically turn the scroll, keeping pace with the vehicle’s speed. Drivers could see the entire journey and check landmarks and towns they passed.
Limited Adoption and Unique Features
Despite its innovative concept, the Iter Avto did not become widespread, mainly due to the limited road infrastructure of the time and the challenge of keeping maps updated.
