A Bold Purchase In 1962, Brendon Grimshaw, a British newspaper editor, made an extraordinary decision. For just £8,000, he purchased Moyenne Island, a small, uninhabited island in the Seychelles. Grimshaw moved to the island full-time in 1973, determined to transform it into a paradise.
Rebuilding a Forgotten Island Over the next several decades, Grimshaw planted more than 16,000 trees and created a haven for over 120 giant tortoises. He also restored the island’s natural environment, cultivating indigenous plants and protecting bird species. The island became a thriving ecosystem under his care.
Protecting Paradise Despite offers from developers, Grimshaw refused to sell the island, choosing instead to protect its biodiversity. He declared Moyenne Island a nature reserve, ensuring its preservation for future generations. It remains the smallest national park in the world.
A Peaceful Legacy Grimshaw lived on the island until his death in 2012. Moyenne Island continues to be a sanctuary for wildlife.
