She was the beautiful, smiling daughter of America’s most powerful political dynasty, presented to the King and Queen of England in a dazzling debutante gown. Yet, just three years later, Rosemary Kennedy vanished from public view, erased from the family narrative while her brothers rose to the heights of global power.
For decades, the world believed she was simply reclusive, but the truth was far more harrowing. At age 23, the eldest Kennedy daughter underwent a controversial medical procedure authorized by her father that instantly reduced her mental capacity to that of a toddler, leaving her institutionalized for the remaining 64 years of her life.
A Difficult Start Behind the Glamour
Born in 1918, Rosemary was the third child of Joseph and Rose Kennedy. Her life began with immediate trauma; during her birth, a nurse manually held the baby back in the birth canal for two hours to delay delivery until the doctor arrived, depriving the infant of oxygen.
As she grew, Rosemary failed to hit standard milestones, crawling, walking, and speaking much later than her energetic older brothers. Despite these intellectual disabilities, she worked hard to integrate into the family’s high-speed life. She kept a diary, traveled to Europe, and in 1938, was presented at court in London, where she performed a perfect curtsy. To the outside world, she appeared to be just another golden Kennedy child.
The Decision to Operate
By 1941, however, the 23-year-old Rosemary began to exhibit behavioral changes that terrified her father, Joseph Kennedy. She suffered from violent convulsions and erratic mood swings, occasionally hitting family members or wandering the streets of Washington, D.C. at night.
Fearing that an unexpected pregnancy or public scandal could derail the political ambitions he held for his sons, Joseph sought a permanent medical solution. He consulted with Dr. Walter Freeman, a proponent of a radical new psychosurgical procedure known as the prefrontal lobotomy. Without consulting his wife Rose, Joseph scheduled the operation.
The Procedure That Went Wrong
On November 20, 1941, Rosemary entered George Washington University Hospital. The procedure was performed while she was fully awake. Doctors drilled holes into her skull and inserted a spatula-like instrument to sever the connections between the prefrontal cortex and the rest of the brain. throughout the surgery, the doctors asked Rosemary to recite the Lord’s Prayer and sing “God Bless America.”
They continued to cut into her brain tissue based on her verbal responses. Suddenly, she became incoherent, and then she stopped speaking altogether. The operation had successfully eliminated her agitation, but it also destroyed her personality and intellect.
A Life in the Shadows
The result was catastrophic. Rosemary lost the ability to walk or speak intelligibly, regressing to the mental state of a two-year-old child. She was immediately moved to a private psychiatric institution in upstate New York and later to St. Coletta’s School for Exceptional Children in Wisconsin. Joseph Kennedy never visited her again.
Her name disappeared from family conversations, and her siblings were not told the truth about her location or condition for twenty years. Rosemary lived in isolation at the institution, far from the White House and the cameras, until her death in 2005.
