In August 1915, an American Baptist newspaper published a story that shocked the scientific and religious worlds. A British evangelist named Elizabeth Reid Cotton, better known as Lady Hope, claimed she had secured a private interview with Charles Darwin shortly before his death.
According to her vivid account, the famed naturalist completely reversed his stance on his world-changing scientific theories. The sensational report ignited a fierce public battle between a popular evangelist and the fiercely protective children of history’s most famous biologist.
A Mysterious Autumn Visit in Kent
Elizabeth Cotton, Lady Hope, was an active figure in the British temperance movement. She claimed that on a beautiful autumn afternoon, she was asked to sit with a bedridden Charles Darwin at his home in Downe, Kent, located about 22.9 kilometers (14.2 miles) from central London. According to her story, she entered his room and found him gazing out the window at the woods and cornfields.
In her published account, she noted that he was wearing a rich purple dressing gown and, most surprisingly, holding an open Bible. When she asked what he was reading, he allegedly replied that he was studying the Book of Hebrews, calling it the Royal Book.
The Alleged Rejection of Evolutionary Theory
Lady Hope claimed the conversation then shifted to the Book of Genesis and the creation of the world. In her narrative, Darwin became distressed, his fingers twitching nervously. She reported that he expressed deep agony over his early scientific work.
He supposedly told her that he was a young man with unformed ideas and threw out suggestions, only to watch in astonishment as those ideas caught like wildfire. According to Lady Hope, Darwin lamented that the public had turned his theories into a religion.
A Request for a Christian Sermon
The evangelist’s story went even further. She stated that Darwin pointed out the window to his summer house, which could hold about thirty people. He supposedly asked her to gather his servants, tenants, and neighbors there the next afternoon to preach a sermon.
When she asked what her topic should be, he allegedly instructed her to speak about Jesus Christ and his salvation. Lady Hope claimed he also asked her to lead hymns, promising to leave his window open so he could join in the singing from his bed.
The Fierce Denial by the Darwin Family
When the story reached the public, the Darwin family completely denied its validity. His son Francis stated that his father’s agnostic views never changed and publicly accused Lady Hope of spreading a falsehood. Darwin’s daughter Henrietta confirmed that her father never recanted any of his scientific views and suggested the conversion story was entirely fabricated in the United States.
His youngest son Leonard dismissed the account as purely fictitious. Today, historians and several prominent creationist organizations alike classify the famous deathbed recantation as a fabricated legend.
