A Country Founded in a Backyard

In 1977, Kevin Baugh established the Republic of Molossia, a self-proclaimed micronation located in his backyard near Dayton, Nevada, USA. Despite its small size—covering about 1.3 acres—Baugh declared himself “His Excellency President” and created an independent government.

Unique Laws and Customs

Molossia has its own currency called the “Valora,” based on the value of cookie dough. The nation also has customs regulations: visitors are prohibited from bringing firearms, onions, or walruses into the country. Kevin Baugh issues official “passports” and enforces quirky national laws for guests who tour Molossia.

War with East Germany

Molossia has been “at war” with East Germany since 1983, a conflict originating from an incident involving an East German official during Baugh’s time in the U.S. military. Despite East Germany’s collapse in 1990, the war remains officially unresolved.

Tourism and Recognition

Molossia hosts tourists who are curious about its government buildings, post office, and currency. The micronation has gained global attention through media coverage, with Kevin Baugh serving as its leader and sole diplomat.

With fewer than 40 residents (including pets), Molossia continues to thrive.
