A Close Call
On October 10, 1989, Donald Trump, then a 43-year-old real estate mogul, faced a pivotal moment that would later shape his perspective on life. As he bid farewell to three of his executives, who were about to board a chartered helicopter to Atlantic City, he briefly considered joining them.
The Split-Second Decision
Trump recalled in his 1990 book Trump: Surviving at the Top that he could have flown with them on the 45-minute trip, turning it into an opportunity to discuss business. But in that instant, he chose to stay behind, citing too much work at the office.
A Tragic Turn
Later that day, tragedy struck. The helicopter, carrying Trump’s three executives, as well as the pilot and co-pilot, crashed into a wooded median on the Garden State Parkway. The rotors had detached mid-flight, and there were no survivors.
A Moment of Reflection
Looking back, Trump described the crash as a sobering reminder of life’s fragility. It taught him that no one, no mattertheir success, is immune from unforeseen disasters.
