Art Concealed in Apollo 12
In 1969, a tiny art exhibit known as the Moon Museum was secretly sent to the Moon aboard Apollo 12. The project, led by artist Forrest Myers, featured a thumbnail-sized ceramic wafer engraved with six artworks created by prominent artists of the time.
Six Artists’ Contributions
The ceramic tile included designs by Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, David Novros, John Chamberlain, and Myers himself. The miniature art collection was smuggled onto the lunar lander’s leg by an unknown NASA engineer.
A Silent Addition to Lunar History
The Moon Museum’s existence was kept quiet for years, with only a few insiders aware of its journey to the Moon. Apollo 12 landed on November 19, 1969, leaving the art piece attached to the lunar surface, where it remains to this day.
