Abby and Brittany Hensel: A Life Like No Other

Born to One Body, Living Two Lives

On March 7, 1990, in Minnesota, Abby and Brittany Hensel were born with dicephalic parapagus—two heads on a single body. Each twin has her own brain, heart, lungs, and stomach. From the waist down, all organs are shared.

They move in perfect coordination, write, drive, and live daily life with one body but two distinct minds. Though doctors warned they might not survive the night, they grew up playing sports, attending school, and eventually earned separate teaching degrees.

Two Brains, One Paycheck

In 2012, Abby and Brittany graduated from Bethel University with degrees in education. They now work as fifth-grade teachers. Each has her own teaching license and divides tasks in the classroom, with one instructing while the other answers questions.

Despite their dual roles and qualifications, they receive only one salary. Abby once said, “We understand that we are going to get one salary because we’re doing the job of one person,” but they hope to negotiate as their experience grows.

Driving, Degrees, and Daily Life

The twins each passed separate driving exams. Abby controls the pedals, Brittany manages signals, and both steer. They have different personalities—Abby is more assertive, Brittany more playful—and they maintain individual opinions, interests, and relationships.

Though born with three arms, one was surgically removed in infancy. In adolescence, they underwent surgery to treat scoliosis and expand their shared chest cavity to prevent breathing issues.

Marriage, Family, and the Future

In 2021, Abby married Josh Bowling, an Army veteran and nurse. Public records confirmed the marriage, and social media later showed wedding photos and family activities.

The couple lives with Josh’s daughter, Isabella. In 2024, the twins posted a video hinting at a pregnancy, though they have not confirmed it publicly. Their mother once said the twins hoped to have children, and Brittany previously stated, “Yeah, we’re going to be moms.”
