A Remote Island in Xochimilco
Located in the canals of Xochimilco, just south of Mexico City, is La Isla de las Muñecas, or the Island of the Dolls. This eerie destination is known for the hundreds of dolls hanging from trees, their decaying bodies and empty eyes creating a haunting atmosphere. The island became an unexpected tourist spot, drawing visitors from around the world.
It All Began with a Tragic Discovery
In the 1950s, a man named Don Julián Santana Barrera began living on the island. Legend has it that one day, he found the body of a young girl who had drowned in the canal nearby. Shortly after, he discovered a doll floating in the water, which he hung from a tree as a gesture to honor the girl’s spirit.
A Growing Collection
Over the years, Santana continued to collect discarded dolls and hung them all over the island. He believed the dolls helped ward off evil spirits and protected the girl’s soul. Visitors often brought dolls to add to the collection, which grew into the hundreds.
The Island Today
Santana passed away in 2001, but the island remains as he left it. The dolls, many deteriorating from exposure to the elements, continue to hang from the trees, making La Isla de las Muñecas one of the most unsettling yet fascinating tourist attractions in Mexico.
