A City of Towering Mudbrick Buildings
Shibam, located in Yemen’s Hadramaut region, is known for its 500-year-old high-rise buildings made entirely of mudbrick. Some of these structures reach over 30 meters (98 feet) high, earning the city the nickname “the Manhattan of the Desert.”
Ingenious Urban Planning
Built in the 16th century, Shibam was designed to protect its residents from floods and attacks. The tall, closely packed buildings created a defensive wall, and elevated living spaces helped safeguard against seasonal flooding from the nearby wadi.
Continuous Maintenance for Survival
Since the buildings are made from sun-dried mudbricks, residents must apply regular maintenance, reinforcing the structures with fresh mud to prevent erosion and collapse. This ancient technique has allowed Shibam to remain habitable for centuries.
A UNESCO-Recognized Site
Shibam is one of the oldest urban centers with vertical construction, influencing later city designs. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, recognized for its unique architecture and historical importance in the Arabian Peninsula’s trade routes.
