A Controversial Artist’s Vision
In 1973, artist Chris Burden staged a provocative performance called 747, where he planned to fire a pistol at a Boeing 747 flying overhead at Los Angeles International Airport. Known for his extreme and daring pieces, Burden wanted to explore themes of power, danger, and distance.
The Setup
Standing near the airport runway, Burden waited for the plane to approach. As the 747 flew overhead, he fired a single shot from a small handgun. The bullet was nowhere near capable of reaching the plane, as it was flying far too high to be affected.
Legal Concerns and Public Reaction
The performance was met with controversy and alarm. Though Burden ensured there was no actual danger to the aircraft, the stunt raised legal and ethical questions, he even was questioned by the FBI.
