Artillery Shells Hit Ski Resort
On 14 October 1968, a routine Swiss Army artillery training exercise went wrong when five artillery shells accidentally struck the Liechtenstein ski resort of Malbun. Miraculously, the only damage was to some outdoor restaurant chairs. This was one of several incidents that raised eyebrows.
Packhorses in the Wrong Place
On 26 August 1976, 75 Swiss soldiers and several packhorses, lost and disoriented, accidentally wandered 500 meters into Liechtenstein at Iradug, Balzers. The locals, friendly as ever, offered the soldiers drinks, but the Swiss quickly realized their mistake and left without further incident.
Missiles Cause Fire
On 5 December 1985, a Swiss anti-aircraft missile launch gone wrong caused a forest fire in a protected area of Liechtenstein. The fire was the result of bad weather conditions, and Switzerland ended up paying millions in compensation for the damage caused.
A Crossed Border in 2007
On 1 March 2007, a company of 171 Swiss soldiers mistakenly entered Liechtenstein due to poor weather and navigation. The Swiss soldiers traveled more than 2 km into the country before realizing their error. Liechtenstein authorities were never alerted, and both sides brushed off the incident.
