A Game with Ancient Roots
Pelota Purépecha, also known as the “fireball game,” is an ancient sport with origins tracing back over a thousand years. Played by the Purépecha people of what is now Michoacán, Mexico, this game has been a key part of their cultural traditions for centuries.
The Rules of the Game
Played similarly to field hockey, Pelota Purépecha involves two teams using wooden sticks to hit a ball. However, in this traditional version, the ball is sometimes set on fire. The objective is to move the fiery ball across the field to score points by reaching the opponent’s side.
Fire and Skill
The fireball is made of resin or pinewood, allowing it to burn slowly. Players use skill and teamwork to pass and score without being burned. Matches often take place at night, making the fiery ball stand out dramatically in the darkness.
Still Alive Today
Pelota Purépecha remains popular in Michoacán and is celebrated in festivals across Mexico.
