The Beach Boys, Charles Manson, and the Story Behind “Never Learn Not to Love”

A Surprising Collaboration

In 1968, Beach Boy Dennis Wilson befriended Charles Manson, then an aspiring musician. Manson wrote “Cease to Exist” specifically for the band, hoping to mend tensions Dennis had with his brothers Brian and Carl Wilson. Dennis agreed to record it.

Changing the Song

The Beach Boys reworked the song’s structure, added new instrumentation, and changed key lyrics, including the title to “Never Learn Not to Love.” Manson accepted a cash payment and a motorcycle but grew furious after realizing his lyrics had been altered.

Tensions Rise

Although Manson was allowed to observe one recording session, he had no direct involvement with the band’s work on the song. As Manson’s behavior became increasingly erratic, Dennis severed their friendship. Manson later threatened him over the changes.

Release and Fallout

“Never Learn Not to Love” was released in December 1968 as the B-side to “Bluebirds over the Mountain” and appeared on the album 20/20 in 1969. Meanwhile, Manson recorded his original version, “Cease to Exist,” for his 1970 album Lie: The Love and Terror Cult.
