A Fascination with Fascism
Unity Valkyrie Mitford, born into Britain’s aristocratic Mitford family in 1914, developed an early fascination with fascism. At 19, she joined her sister Diana in supporting the British Union of Fascists, and soon became captivated by Adolf Hitler’s ideology.
Moving to Germany
In 1934, Mitford moved to Munich with the goal of meeting Hitler. She frequently visited locations he frequented, and after several attempts, finally met him in 1935. To Hitler, Mitford became a trusted friend, and she joined his inner circle, often attending public events and dinners with him.
The Start of World War II
When Britain declared war on Germany in September 1939, Mitford was devastated. Unable to reconcile her loyalty to both Britain and Hitler, she attempted suicide in Munich. She survived but suffered a severe head injury that would affect her for life.
Returning to England
After her injury, Unity was allowed to return to England in 1940, under pressure from her family. She lived quietly until her death in 1948, never fully recovering from her injuries.
