In East Vancouver, a wild crow with a red zip-tie on his leg captured the city’s imagination by doing things no other bird dared. From commuting by train to interfering in police work, Canuck became a local celebrity—and then, just as suddenly, vanished.
After being raised by a young boy who rescued him as a chick in 2015, Canuck returned to the wild but remained unusually attached to humans. He was first noticed when he perched on a cyclist and rummaged through his bag. Soon after, he was spotted riding the SkyTrain and making appearances at sporting events.
Canuck’s fame peaked in 2016 when he picked up a knife from an active crime scene. Police were responding to a violent incident when Canuck swooped in, grabbed the weapon, and flew off before dropping it nearby.
Despite being attacked in 2017 and suffering injuries, Canuck recovered and started a family with his mate, Cassiar. His social media following grew. But on 30 August 2019, he disappeared. His mate was seen calling for him for days. A $10,000 reward was offered, but no verified trace of Canuck was ever found.
