In 1846, an average-sized couple in Nova Scotia welcomed a baby girl who would soon outgrow her entire town. By her fifteenth birthday, Anna Haining Swan stood towering over everyone she met, eventually reaching a staggering height of 7 feet 11 inches (2.41 meters). Her astounding growth spurt led her from a quiet farm to the bustling stages of P.T. Barnum’s American Museum in New York City. From escaping a devastating fire to marrying a man of equal stature in a highly publicized wedding, her astonishing life story captivated the globe.
A Colossal Rise To Global Fame
Anna was born weighing 16 pounds (7.26 kilograms). She grew at an astonishing rate. P.T. Barnum, the famous showman, heard of her incredible height and offered her a contract in 1862. She moved to New York City and became a prominent attraction. She was billed as the tallest girl in the world. During her time there, she narrowly escaped the disastrous fire that burned down Barnum’s museum in 1865. The stairs were engulfed in flames, so it took 18 men to lower her through a third-story window using a heavy rope and tackle block.
A Record-Breaking Romance
While touring, Anna met Martin Van Buren Bates. He was a former military captain who stood 7 feet 9 inches (2.36 meters) tall. The two towering figures fell in love and decided to wed. They traveled to Europe and got married in London on June 17, 1871. Thousands of people tried to attend the ceremony. Queen Victoria herself took a keen interest in the couple. She gifted them diamond rings and a massive gold watch adorned with diamonds. They officially became the tallest married couple in recorded history.
Building A Custom Giant Home
The couple desired a quiet life away from the stage. They moved to Seville, Ohio, and purchased a farm. To accommodate their massive frames, they designed and built a custom house. The ceilings were 14 feet (4.27 meters) high. The doors were 8.5 feet (2.59 meters) tall. All the furniture was custom-made to fit their proportions. They entertained guests often and became respected members of their local agricultural community.
Heartbreak And Final Years
Anna and Martin wanted a family. Anna gave birth to a girl in 1872 who weighed 18 pounds (8.16 kilograms) but died at birth. In 1879, she delivered a boy weighing 23.9 pounds (10.84 kilograms) and measuring 28 inches (71.12 centimeters) long. Tragically, he survived for only 11 hours. Anna Haining Bates passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 5, 1888, a day before her 42nd birthday.
