An Ambitious Vision
Announced in January 2021, The Line is a 170-kilometer-long linear city within Saudi Arabia’s Neom development. Designed to house 9 million people, the futuristic city aims to be car-free, with essential services within a five-minute walk. The project’s defining feature is its two parallel skyscrapers, each 500 meters tall and 200 meters wide, running across the desert landscape.
Long-Term Construction Timeline
Initially expected to be partially completed by 2030, recent updates indicate that The Line may take up to 100 years to fully realize. While construction has already begun, with extensive earthworks and piling operations in progress, only a 2.4-kilometer section may be completed by 2030, accommodating around 300,000 residents.
Leadership and Challenges
In November 2024, CEO Nadhmi Al-Nasr was dismissed due to budget concerns and project delays, with Aimen Al-Mudaifer taking over. The project faces engineering and financial challenges, requiring substantial investment.
Future Prospects
As part of Vision 2030, The Line aims to redefine urban living with sustainable design and cutting-edge technology. Despite its ambitious scale, its success will depend on overcoming infrastructure and funding obstacles in the coming decades.
