A Mysterious Talent
In the early 1860s, William Mumler shocked the world by producing photographs that seemed to show spirits alongside the living. His eerie images drew believers and skeptics alike to his Boston studio.
A Skeptic Puts Him to the Test
Photographer James Wallace Black, known for the first aerial photos of Boston, sought to debunk Mumler’s claims. He personally supervised a session, ensuring no tricks could be used during the process.
A Shadow in the Image
Black inspected the camera, plate, and chemicals. Yet, when his photograph developed, an unexpected figure appeared—a ghostly man resting his hand on Black’s shoulder. Stunned, he left with the image.
The Unsolved Mystery
Though experts tried to uncover his method, none could explain Mumler’s spirit photos. He was later accused of fraud but acquitted. His images remained controversial, drawing figures like Mary Todd Lincoln, who sought a final glimpse of her lost husband.
