The Rise and Fall of the Silver Shirts

A Vision from the Spirits

In 1933, American William Dudley Pelley claimed a divine vision foretold Adolf Hitler’s rise and his own destiny as “The Chief” of the United States. Inspired, he founded the Silver Legion, or Silver Shirts, a Christian militia with Nazi-inspired ideals, complete with silver uniforms.

A Dangerous Agenda

Pelley’s vision for America included state-controlled property, re-enslaving African-Americans, and excluding Jews. At its height, the Silver Shirts boasted 15,000 members. Pelley’s movement gained traction in the Pacific Northwest and even constructed a self-sustaining compound in Los Angeles.

The Government Steps In

By 1939, Pelley’s activities drew federal scrutiny. The Dies Committee, tasked with investigating extremists, uncovered his ambition to become dictator. Under pressure, Pelley disbanded the group. Still, he was convicted of sedition during WWII and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

A New Focus

Released in 1950, Pelley turned to spiritualism and UFO theories. His writings on “SoulCraft” gained a niche following. His political movement failed.
