A Church Tower in the Water
Lago di Resia, a lake in northern Italy’s South Tyrol region, is known for a bell tower rising from its waters. The lake was created in 1950 when a dam was built to unite three natural lakes. As a result, the village of Curon was flooded, forcing 163 homes and nearly 1,200 residents to relocate.
The Last Toll of the Bells
Before the flooding, Curon’s residents were forced to abandon their homes. The church, dating back to the 14th century, was left standing. Its bells rang for the last time before being removed. The water rose, submerging everything except the church tower, which still stands above the lake’s surface.
A Frozen Path to the Past
In winter, the lake freezes, allowing visitors to walk up to the tower. Many come to see the unusual sight and learn about the village beneath. Some claim to hear bells ringing, though they were removed long ago.
A Village Beneath the Surface
The ruins of Curon remain submerged. Divers have explored remnants of homes and pathways that once bustled with life. Though the village was lost to water, its history is still visible above the surface.
