Tracking a 28-Year-Old Spy 🕵️

The Old Dog Case

Dimitry Droujinsky, a seasoned FBI agent, was facing one of his toughest cases. In 1993, 28 years after a National Security Agency (NSA) clerk named Robert Lipka sold secrets to the KGB, Droujinsky was tasked with reeling him in.

Posing as a KGB Officer

Droujinsky booked a room in a Lancaster, Pennsylvania motel. Posing as “Sergei Nikitin” from the Russian Embassy, he called Lipka and requested a meeting. To Lipka’s surprise, Droujinsky played the part of a KGB handler perfectly.

The Code Word

During their meetings, Lipka asked for a code word to prove Droujinsky’s authenticity. Guessing “rook” from a chess clue, Droujinsky managed to crack the code, earning Lipka’s trust.

The Arrest

Over several meetings, Lipka revealed his past espionage activities. In 1996, he was finally arrested and sentenced to 18 years in prison.
