Yellowstone: Behind the Scenes of TV’s Biggest Western Drama

The Ranch Is Real

The Yellowstone Dutton Ranch exists as Chief Joseph Ranch in Darby, Montana, with cabins available for rent. The lodge house, a real 6,000-square-foot log mansion, was built in 1920.

Filmed in Montana

Since 2020, all filming takes place in Montana, with new stages in Missoula and scenes at the Chief Joseph Ranch.

Cowboy Cred

Several cast members, including creator Taylor Sheridan, are real-life cowboys. Forrie J. Smith, who plays Lloyd, grew up ranching, competed in rodeos, and uses his memorabilia on set.

Cowboy Camp Training

Before filming, actors attend Cowboy Camp, learning horse-riding and ranching skills. However, Jefferson White (Jimmy) had never ridden a horse before joining the cast.

Yellowstone’s Horses

Taylor Sheridan owns many of the horses used on the show, while others are rodeo champions like Metallic Cat and Smartly Starstruck.

Kevin Costner’s Western Love

Costner’s love for Westerns shines, with roles in Wyatt Earp and Hatfields & McCoys. He even released a Yellowstone-inspired music album with his band, Kevin Costner & Modern West.

Spinoff Universe

Yellowstone has inspired spinoffs like 1883, 1923, and 6666, featuring stars like Tim McGraw and Harrison Ford.
