A New Beginning
In December 1975, George Lutz and his family moved into a house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York. The house had been the site of a gruesome murder a year earlier, when Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed six members of his family. Despite the tragic history, the Lutz family saw it as a fresh start.
Strange Occurrences
Shortly after moving in, George began to notice strange and unsettling phenomena. He claimed to wake up every night at 3:15 AM, the same time the DeFeo murders took place. The family reported cold spots, foul odors, and unexplained noises throughout the house. George also noticed unusual behavior in himself, including sudden fits of rage and a growing obsession with the house’s history.
Fleeing the House
After just 28 days, the Lutz family fled the house, leaving all their belongings behind. They claimed they had been terrorized by malevolent forces. Their experiences became the basis for the 1977 book The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson, which later inspired a series of films.
Controversy and Debate
The truth behind George Lutz’s story has been widely debated. While some believe the Lutz family’s experiences were genuine, others view them as a hoax. Regardless, George Lutz’s account of the Amityville house remains one of the most famous haunted house stories in American history.
