A Plan with a Twist
In September 2016, Lawrence John Ripple, a 70-year-old man from Kansas City, walked into a bank and handed the teller a note demanding money. Ripple sat in the bank lobby after receiving $2,924 from the teller, calmly waiting for police to arrive.
Unexpected Motivation
Ripple’s motive shocked everyone: he wanted to be arrested. Earlier that day, Ripple had argued with his wife and told her he would rather be in jail than at home. After leaving the house, he carried out the robbery, fully intending to turn himself in immediately.
Arrested on the Spot
When police arrived at the bank, Ripple offered no resistance and confessed to the crime. He was arrested and charged with bank robbery. His story quickly gained attention due to the unusual circumstances.
An Unusual Sentence
In January 2017, Ripple was sentenced to six months of home confinement instead of prison. The judge took into account Ripple’s health, his lack of a criminal record, and his unique reason for committing the crime. Instead of jail, he was sentenced to stay at home with his wife.
