Early Life
Lili Elbe was born as Einar Wegener in Denmark in 1882. Einar worked as a successful painter, living with his wife, Gerda Wegener, also a talented artist. Their life changed dramatically in the 1920s when Einar began to live as Lili, embracing her true identity as a woman.
Transition to Lili Elbe
Lili Elbe was one of the first known recipients of gender reassignment surgery. In 1930, she traveled to Germany to undergo a series of experimental surgeries at the Dresden Municipal Women’s Clinic. Her transition was groundbreaking and brought attention to transgender identities at a time when such discussions were rare.
Final Years
Sadly, complications from her surgeries led to Lili’s death in 1931 at the age of 48. Despite this, Lili Elbe’s courage in living authentically and undergoing pioneering surgeries has left a lasting mark on history.
