In June 1878, photographer Eadweard Muybridge captured what no one had seen before—a horse in full gallop with all four legs off the ground. Working with Leland Stanford at the Palo Alto track, Muybridge used 12 cameras triggered by tripwires to photograph Stanford’s racehorse, Sallie Gardner, running at a 1:40 gait.

Nearly two millennia before rockets ever launched, a writer in the Roman Empire imagined battles in space, Moon cities, and cosmic travel. Around 175 CE, Lucian of Samosata wrote True History, a satirical narrative that sent its characters to the stars, armed with turnips and riding giant fleas.

On August 6, 1945, engineer Tsutomu Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on assignment for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. As he walked to the train station, the atomic bomb detonated less than 3 kilometers away. Blinded and burned, he spent the night in a shelter and returned to Nagasaki the next day.

When the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912, Chief Baker Charles Joughin was off duty. After helping load lifeboats and giving away provisions, he returned to his cabin and drank what he later described as “a good deal” of liquor before going topside as the ship sank.

In the early 1900s, Edgar Randolph Parker, a struggling dentist, turned to spectacle to survive. After legally renaming himself “Painless” Parker in 1915, he launched a traveling “Dental Circus.” Backed by a brass band, he claimed to extract teeth without pain—while tapping his foot to signal louder music, drowning out patients’ screams.
