In May 1941, the German battleship Bismarck set sail for its first and only mission. Onboard was a black and white cat named Oscar. The Bismarck was engaged by the British Navy and, after a fierce battle, was sunk on May 27, 1941. Of the approximately 2,200 crew members, only 118 survived. Among the survivors, remarkably, was Oscar, found floating on a piece of debris by the British destroyer HMS Cossack.
