The April Fools Competition
On April 1, 2001, Hooters employee Jodee Berry competed in a company contest to sell the most beer, with the grand prize being a brand-new Toyota. Jodee excelled in the competition and eagerly anticipated receiving her car.
The “Toy Yoda” Surprise
However, upon winning, Jodee was handed a “Toy Yoda” doll instead of a car. It was all part of an April Fools’ joke by Gulf Coast Wings, Inc., the Hooters franchise owner. The play on words left Jodee less than amused.
Taking Legal Action
Furious, Jodee filed a civil lawsuit against Gulf Coast Wings, Inc. for breach of contract and fraudulent misrepresentation. The court upheld her complaint, ruling in Jodee’s favor.
Justice Served
Though the exact amount was not disclosed, Jodeeβs attorney confirmed she received enough compensation to walk into a dealership and choose any Toyota she wanted. The prank backfired on the company, and Jodee ultimately won the car she was promised.
