A man steps into the courtroom, addresses the judge, and wins his case. He does this twenty-six times before High Court judges, magistrates, and Court of Appeal judges in Kenya. His clients celebrate their legal victories, trusting their young advocate. There is just one massive problem: the man in the courtroom has no license to practice law. This is the unbelievable true story of Brian Mwenda Njagi, an identity theft operation, and the scandal that shook the Law Society of Kenya to its absolute core.
A Flawless Winning Streak in Kenyan Courts
Brian Mwenda Njagi lacked a law degree and never attended law school. He studied criminology at Chuka University. Despite having no formal legal qualifications, he successfully masqueraded as a legal professional. Operating within the Kenyan judicial system, Mwenda took on 26 different cases.
He represented unsuspecting clients across various courts, including the High Court of Kenya. Records indicate that he won every single one of the 26 cases he argued. His success rate was completely flawless, allowing him to operate undetected.
Executing the Law Society Portal Breach
To practice law, Mwenda needed official credentials. He achieved this through a sophisticated identity theft scheme. Mwenda targeted the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) portal. He identified a fully qualified lawyer with a nearly identical name: Brian Mwenda Ntwiga.
The real lawyer was admitted to the Kenyan bar in August 2022 but had not applied for a practicing certificate while working at the Office of the Attorney General. The fake lawyer unlawfully accessed the LSK portal, altered contact details, changed the email address, and uploaded his photograph to hijack the profile.
The Real Lawyer Discovers the Deception
The deception finally collapsed in September 2023. The legitimate advocate, Brian Mwenda Ntwiga, needed to activate his practicing certificate. When he attempted to log into the LSK portal, he found himself locked out. He contacted the LSK secretariat to report the failure.
The IT department investigated and quickly discovered that the email address associated with the account had been changed. This discovery exposed the identity theft and triggered an internal investigation by the Law Society of Kenya.
The Arrest and Public Aftermath
Following the discovery, the LSK Rapid Action Team and local police moved to apprehend the imposter. The LSK publicly declared him a masquerader and a criminal. The story captivated the East African nation. While authorities condemned his actions, he gained high-profile supporters.
Mike Sonko, the former governor of Nairobi, publicly backed him, and the Central Organisation of Trade Unions praised his mind. Mwenda was subsequently arrested, facing multiple charges for his unprecedented courtroom deception.
