The Smartest Man Alive Who Walked Away From Academia 🧠

A Childhood of Astonishing Intelligence

Born in 1952, Christopher Langan displayed remarkable intelligence from an early age, speaking at six months and reading by three. Despite growing up in poverty and enduring abuse from his stepfather, Langan’s intellect shone through. By the age of 12, he’d outgrown what his public school could teach and turned to self-education, learning advanced mathematics, philosophy, and languages.

College Dreams Cut Short

After high school, Langan attended Reed College on a scholarship, but when his mother failed to sign a financial aid form, he lost the scholarship and had to drop out. He later attended Montana State University but left after clashing with professors and struggling with transportation issues. Frustrated with the academic system, Langan declared he had no respect for “acadummies” and abandoned formal education.

A Life of Odd Jobs

Despite having an IQ between 195 and 210, Langan turned to manual labor, working as a cowboy, bouncer, and construction worker. At one point, he was earning just $6,000 a year. But his brilliant mind never stopped working, and he spent his free time developing his “Cognition-Theoretic Model of the Universe” (CTMU), a theory that seeks to explain everything, including the existence of God.

Living Simply

Today, Langan lives quietly on a horse ranch in Missouri with his wife. Though he’s been called the “smartest man alive,” he avoids public attention, instead focusing on his intellectual pursuits and running the Mega Foundation, a nonprofit for people with high IQs.
