Erected in 1923 as “Hollywoodland”
The original Hollywood sign was erected in 1923 and read “Hollywoodland.” It was built as a real estate advertisement to promote a new housing development in the Hollywood Hills. Each letter was 30 feet wide and 50 feet tall, illuminated by around 4,000 light bulbs.
Meant to Be Temporary
The sign was intended to last only 18 months but quickly became an iconic part of Los Angeles. However, due to its growing fame, the sign remained standing long after the promotion ended.
Falling into Disrepair
By the late 1940s, the sign had fallen into a state of disrepair, with some letters damaged or missing. In 1949, the “H” had even tumbled down the hill. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce agreed to repair and maintain it, but the “land” portion was removed, transforming it into the “Hollywood” sign we know today.
A Landmark Restored
In 1978, the sign underwent a complete renovation with funding from celebrities and private donors, ensuring its place as an enduring icon of the entertainment industry.
