Injured in His First Battle
Adrian Carton de Wiart, born in 1880 in Belgium, fought in several major wars, including the Boer War, both World Wars, and conflicts in between. In his first battle, he was shot in the stomach and groin but managed to survive.
Losing a Hand but Staying in the Fight
During World War I, Carton de Wiart was shot multiple times and eventually lost his left hand. Despite this, he insisted on returning to the front lines, even removing his own fingers when doctors refused to amputate them.
Surviving Impossible Odds
In 1915, he was shot in the head and ankle; later, he was shot in the hip, leg, and ear. In World War II, his plane crashed in the Mediterranean, leading to his capture by Italian forces. He eventually escaped but was recaptured.
A Remarkable End to a Soldier’s Life
Carton de Wiart finally retired after the war, settling in Ireland. He lived to the age of 83, having served nearly 50 years in the military and surviving countless injuries, each time returning to the battlefield undeterred.
