A Unique Location
Barra Airport, located on the tiny Isle of Barra in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, is the only airport in the world where scheduled flights use a tidal beach as the runway. Operated by Loganair, it connects the island to mainland Scotland.
Flights with the Tide
The airport has three marked runways, all on the Traigh Mhòr beach. These runways disappear underwater when the tide comes in. Flights are scheduled around the tidal timetable, making Barra Airport entirely dependent on nature’s clock.
Weather Challenges
High winds and rough weather can delay flights, as there are no navigational lights or advanced systems. Instead, local knowledge and experience play key roles in safe landings and takeoffs.
