A Home Carved from Stone
In 1972, a unique house was built in the Fafe Mountains of northern Portugal. Known as Casa do Penedo (House of the Rock), it was constructed between four massive boulders. The structure was designed to blend with its natural surroundings, using stone walls and a rustic interior.
A Rural Retreat Without Electricity
The house was originally intended as a rural getaway for a family seeking solitude. Despite its unusual design, it lacked modern amenities such as electricity. A fireplace provided heat, and the furniture was made of logs and stone to match the house’s rugged appearance.
Tourist Attraction and Security Challenges
As photos of Casa do Penedo spread, it attracted international attention. The growing number of visitors led to security concerns, and the house was later reinforced with bulletproof windows and a steel door.
Still Standing in the Mountains
Although no longer used as a residence, Casa do Penedo remains a tourist attraction. Its unusual design and remote location continue to draw visitors who come to see the house that appears to have grown out of the rocks.
