A New Direction for The Mandalorian
In January 2024, Lucasfilm announced The Mandalorian & Grogu, a feature film directed by Jon Favreau and co-written by Favreau and Dave Filoni. Originally, a fourth season of The Mandalorian was planned, but Hollywood labor disputes delayed production. Lucasfilm then prioritized a film over the season.
Production and Cast
Filming began in California by August 2024 and wrapped in December. Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin, with Grogu created through animatronics and visual effects. The cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt, and Jonny Coyne as an Imperial Warlord. The film also features the return of Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios and the Anzellan species.
Filming and Marketing
The movie, filmed entirely in California, received one of the state’s largest tax incentive allocations. Initial footage was shown at Disney’s D23 convention in August 2024, followed by more previews at D23 Brasil in November.
Release Date
The Mandalorian & Grogu is scheduled for release in the United States on May 22, 2026. It marks the first Star Wars theatrical film since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.
