A Sudden Impact
On November 30, 1954, Anne Hodges was resting on her couch in Sylacauga, Alabama, when a nine-pound meteorite crashed through her roof. The space rock ricocheted off a radio before striking her in the side, leaving a massive bruise. She became the first confirmed person in history to be hit by a meteorite.
A Battle Over Ownership
After the incident, both Anne and her landlord, Birdie Guy, claimed ownership of the meteorite. The legal dispute lasted months, with Guy arguing that the meteorite belonged to her since it fell on her property. Eventually, Anne and her husband, Eugene, won possession after reaching a settlement.
The Meteorite’s Fate
Hodges later donated the meteorite to the Alabama Museum of Natural History. She and her husband struggled with the sudden fame, and the stress took a toll on her health. She later moved to a nursing home, passing away in 1972 at age 52.
