A Life-Defining Phone Call
On the night before the September 11 attacks, Michael Jackson’s life took a dramatic turn. Jermaine Jackson, Michael’s older brother, revealed that the pop icon was supposed to be at a meeting at the World Trade Center that morning, but thanks to a late-night conversation, he overslept.
The Late-Night Chat
Jermaine described how Michael had stayed up late the night before the tragedy, talking with family members until around 3 a.m. When their mother called to check on him after the attacks, Michael was safe in his hotel room. “Mother, I’m okay, thanks to you,” he reportedly said. “You kept me up talking so late that I overslept and missed my appointment.”
An Unverified Escape
A popular, but unconfirmed, tale circulated after 9/11 about Michael, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marlon Brando fleeing New York together in a rental car. The trio supposedly drove across the country, indulging in fast food along the way, but this story has never been verified.
Posthumous Earnings
Despite passing away in 2009, Michael Jackson continued to make headlines. In 2016, seven years after his death, he topped Forbes’ list of highest-paid dead celebrities, earning $825 million that year.
