From Flowers to a Loaded Gun: The Disturbing Reality of Rhythm 0 😨

An Unusual Invitation

In 1974, Marina Abramović conducted an experimental performance art piece titled Rhythm 0 at Studio Morra in Naples. For six hours, she stood motionless while the audience was invited to interact with her however they wished. On a table nearby, 72 objects were provided, ranging from harmless items like feathers to more dangerous ones, such as a knife and a gun and a bullet.

No Restrictions, No Resistance

Abramović made no movement or resistance as participants used the objects on her. Initially, audience members approached her gently, using flowers and other benign objects. However, as time passed, the crowd’s behavior became more unpredictable.

A Turn to Aggression

As the hours progressed, the atmosphere shifted. People started cutting her clothes, pressing thorns into her skin, and at one point, even placing the loaded gun to her head. An audience member intervened to stop further harm. Abramović remained passive throughout.

The End of the Experiment

After six hours, the gallery announced the end of the performance. Abramović began to move, and the same participants who had exhibited aggressive behavior retreated, avoiding direct eye contact with her. The performance ended with a stark reflection of human nature under no rules.
