In the early twentieth century, Germany was a global center of scientific research. Within a few short years, the nation lost this intellectual standing, altering the trajectory of the atomic age. A politically driven movement emerged that sought to classify physics by race, actively rejecting modern theoretical discoveries. These political policies drove away leading physicists, stalling the German nuclear weapons program, while many of these exiled scientists later contributed directly to the United States’ atomic bomb development.
The Rise of “Aryan Physics”
Following World War I, a nationalistic movement grew within the German physics community. Nobel laureates Philipp Lenard and Johannes Stark spearheaded a campaign against modern theoretical physics, specifically targeting the concepts of relativity and quantum mechanics. When the Third Reich rose to power, Lenard and Stark aligned with the regime. They labeled the work of Albert Einstein and his contemporaries as “Jewish Physics,” promoting a racially driven alternative called “Deutsche Physik” or Aryan Physics. They argued that acceptable science should be strictly experimental and driven by the Nordic race.
The Expulsion of the Physicists
The implementation of the 1935 Nuremberg Laws fundamentally changed German academic institutions. The legislation mandated the dismissal of all Jewish professors from German universities. The nation emptied its laboratories and lecture halls of many physicists. Instead of retaining the experts required to understand nuclear fission, the state enforced political conformity. The scientists who fled this environment sought refuge abroad, taking their extensive knowledge of theoretical physics with them to allied nations.
The Harassment of Werner Heisenberg
The proponents of Deutsche Physik also targeted German scholars who accepted modern theories. Werner Heisenberg, a pioneer of quantum mechanics, faced relentless harassment. A prominent publication labeled him a “White Jew” for continuing to teach Einstein’s concepts. The attacks only ceased after Heisenberg’s mother directly contacted the mother of SS leader Heinrich Himmler. Following a full evaluation, Himmler ordered an end to the harassment, deciding that Germany strictly needed Heisenberg’s expertise for its nascent nuclear fission project.
A Crippled Nuclear Ambition
Despite Heisenberg’s eventual protection, the impact on German science was permanent. The adherence to political purity had degraded the education of young engineers and researchers. The German nuclear weapons project remained underfunded and lacked the immense resources and urgency of the American Manhattan Project. The European exiles who had been driven out by the antisemitic agenda applied their expertise to the United States’ efforts. Ultimately, the ideological rejection of theoretical physics ensured that the German pursuit of the atomic bomb did not succeed.
