A Guitarist in the Shadows
In 1989, Jason Everman joined Nirvana as a second guitarist and paid the $606.17 recording fee for their debut album Bleach. Though he didn’t play on the tracks, he was credited and toured with the band. Later that year, he briefly played bass for Soundgarden and performed on their Beatles cover “Come Together.” By 1990, Everman had also played with OLD and, in 1993, joined Mind Funk as a guitarist.
From Stage to Battlefield
In 1994, Everman left music to enlist in the U.S. Army. He served with the 2nd Ranger Battalion and later the Special Forces, completing tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. After his honorable discharge in 2006, he earned a philosophy degree from Columbia University, aided by a recommendation from General Stanley McChrystal.
Veteran and Musician Again
In 2017, Everman co-founded the veteran-staffed band Silence & Light. They recorded their first album in 2019, with proceeds supporting military and first responder charities. Everman also earned a master’s degree in military history and continues to consult on defense matters.
