For decades, people around the world have been tormented by a mysterious, low-frequency sound. Known simply as “The Hum,” this invasive, droning noise has been reported from the United Kingdom to New Zealand. While the sound drives some residents to despair, many of their own neighbors hear absolutely nothing. Is it industrial machinery, a secret military broadcast, or simply an internal biological glitch? The search for answers has puzzled scientists for nearly fifty years.
The Geography of the Droning Sound
The phenomenon rarely manifests as a single, unified sound. Instead, it seems to appear in specific localities, often adopting the name of the region where it is most prominent. In the early 1990s, the “Taos Hum” in New Mexico attracted national attention, with studies indicating that approximately two percent of the local population could hear the 32 to 80-hertz frequency. Hearers noted that the sound could be detected up to 30 miles away, and equal numbers of men and women reported the disturbance.
Other outbreaks have occurred globally. In 2011, residents of Windsor, Ontario, were bombarded by a loud droning vibration that prompted 22,000 complaints to officials in a single evening. The noise was eventually traced to a heavy steelworks plant operating on the heavily industrialized Zug Island near Detroit. When the massive blast furnaces were finally deactivated in April 2020, the noise vanished.
Mechanical Monsters and Natural Wonders
While some instances of the Hum are traced directly to industrial equipment, the vast majority remain unexplained. In Seattle, one version of the noise was eventually linked to a vacuum pump offloading cargo ships. In Kokomo, Indiana, heavy machinery was blamed—yet when the equipment was repaired, the noise continued for many residents.
Other theories suggest natural causes. In 1973, researcher Philip Dickinson theorized that the high-altitude jet stream shearing against slow-moving air could create the low-frequency drone. Meanwhile, in coastal areas like Sausalito, California, marine biologists discovered that a localized hum was actually the collective mating call of the male midshipman fish, vibrating through the hulls of houseboats.
The Biology of Background Noise
When external searches fail, medical professionals often look internally. Many physicians suggest that the Hum might simply be a form of low-frequency tinnitus—an internal sound generated entirely by the auditory and nervous systems. This theory gains traction because many sufferers report that the noise becomes worse indoors or after installing soundproofing, which eliminates other distracting environmental noises.
Additionally, human ears naturally produce their own internal noises, called spontaneous otoacoustic emissions. While up to 60 percent of adults generate these sounds, most remain completely unaware of them. Because the Hum remains highly subjective—audible only to a fraction of the population—medical experts like audiologist David Baguley suggest that cognitive behavioral therapy and relaxation techniques might be the most effective way for sufferers to find relief from the endless noise.
