A Shocking Secret
In 1953, the CIA launched Project MKUltra, a covert program designed to develop mind control techniques through drugs and psychological manipulation. It would span two decades, using unwitting American and Canadian citizens as test subjects, subjected to experiments that included LSD, electroshock therapy, and hypnosis.
Disturbing Methods
MKUltra’s methods were invasive and brutal. Victims, including prisoners, mental patients, and even U.S. military personnel, were dosed with LSD, subjected to sensory deprivation, and exposed to extreme psychological stress. Some experiments resulted in permanent psychological damage.
The Project’s Scope
The program was vast, involving over 80 institutions, including universities and hospitals, across the United States and Canada. Many of these institutions unknowingly participated in the program, funded through CIA front organizations. The experiments were often conducted without the subjects’ knowledge or consent.
The Revelation
MKUltra remained a secret until the 1970s, when congressional investigations revealed the full extent of the program. In 1977, surviving documents were uncovered, shedding light on the CIA’s illicit activities. The project’s destructive legacy remains a controversial chapter in U.S. history.
